How to glue wood: a guide to extricate yourself with the choice of the best wood glue, gluing wood on wood and wood with other materials. How to glue wood on glass, ceramic, metal, plastic, leather or building materials.

Thewoodit's easy topaste, in fact, all types of glues can be used to be selected based on the material with which it is joined.

Wood glue

For excellence, theglue for woodmost used is the vinyl one. Therevinyl glueit is nothing more than a milky mixture formed by particles of vinyl acetate dispersed in water. The vinyl glue is very penetrating and, on the other hand, wood is a very porous material.

The aqueous component of the vinyl glue constitutes 50% of the volume, many carpenters, to improve the penetration of the glue into the wood, increase the amount of water by performing a further dilution. In this case, however, it will be essential to impregnate both parts of the wood to be glued to allow good adhesion.

Drying times are long and depend on how concentrated the vinyl acetate is, in fact it is necessary to wait for the aqueous component to evaporate completely so the droplets of vinyl acetate unite to form a solid mass that firmly binds two components.

Therevinyl glueit can be considered a very good "universal glue" but it has a flaw: it has anything but immediate grip! On the market it is possible to find “quick-setting vinyl glue” but this means that the glue is only more concentrated and that it still needs several hours to dry. For this reason, if you want to use vinyl glue likeglue for wood, it will be necessary to keep the pieces under pressure using a vice, straps, weights or other systems that can hold the two pieces to be glued together for at least 24 hours.

Not everyone knows this but there are three types of vinyl glue, all three excellent for wood. There is the classic white vinyl glue, then there is the yellow vinyl glue (aliphatic glue) which is much more resistant than the classic. Yellow vinyl glue is one glue for wood resistant to heat, water, fats, solvents and even transverse stresses. Another one glue for wood very resistant is the interlacing vinyl glue (polyphatic) which is able to build a junction grid even more difficult to detach.

Vinyl glue is great, but it only works between two porous materials. It is perfect forglue wood on woodbut not when the wood has to be attached to a piece of metal, plastic or glass.

How to glue wood to plastic

Plastic can be glued to wood using any contact glue. The contact glue adheres to itself very tenaciously. There are many types on the market, the most widespread and useful for glue the plastic to the wood is a solution of neoprene in a very volatile solvent.

How to glue plastic to wood? Just apply an even layer on both faces to be joined and let the solvent evaporate completely. The solvent, unlike the water in which the droplets of vinyl acetate are immersed, is very volatile, so drying takes only 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the amount of glue used. If the wood or plastic are light and of a decent size, the union can also be immediate. The final and maximum setting occurs after 48-72 hours.

But be careful! If you can make a mistake with vinyl, no mistakes are allowed with glue in contact because once the two parts come into contact, they cannot be repositioned: the glue immediately tends to create a rigid grid, so if you want glue wood on plastic, you have no second chances and you will have to act very carefully.

If vinyl glue is popular and known by everyone, it is not the same for neoprene solutions. An excellent product is the “superchiaro di bostik” glue, you can buy it in any do-it-yourself shop, in hardware stores or by taking advantage of online purchases; on this Amazon page, for example, a jar in maxi format (850 g) can be bought at a price of 11 euros and free shipping.

How to glue wood to metal

To glue wood to metal, you can use epoxy paste or two-component glue as explained in the guide article "How to glue metal ".

How to glue wood to glass

If you want to glue a wooden shelf to a mirror or glass surface, you will need a special cyanoacrylate glue. If the shelf or piece of wood is very large, you can first try to impregnate the wooden surface with vinyl glue or a layer of neoprene contact glue. For more information, please refer to the guide: "how to glue glass“.

How to glue wood to the wall

In this case, assembly glue is required, i.e. glues based on polychloroprene, acrylates and other polymers with a pasty consistency such as MS-polymer. When fixing vertically or if you want to glue a wooden shelf to the wall, perhaps a heavy shelf, you will need to keep the component to be glued stabilized until it is perfectly gripped. On "this Amazon page" you can find glues capable of attaching wood to the wall, I have pointed out a particular product but, as stated, you can feel free to choose any pasty glue based on polychloroprene or acrylates.
